  • Exercise significantly reduced the risk of mortality in patients with cancer and in cancer survivors (risk ratio [RR] = 0.76, 95% CI = 0.40-0.93, I2 = 0%, P = .009).

Effect of Exercise on Mortality and Recurrence in Patients With Cancer: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis, 2020

 

Abstract

Purpose: Exercise could lower the risk of cancer recurrence and improve mortality, exercise capacity, physical and cardiovascular function, strength, and quality of life in patients with cancer. This systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) aimed to determine the effects of exercise on mortality and recurrence in patients with cancer. 

 

Methods: We included RCTs of exercise interventions, such as resistance exercise and aerobic exercise, in patients with cancer that evaluated the risk of mortality and recurrence. 

 

Results: Of 2868 retrieved articles, 8 RCTs were included in the meta-analysis, with a mean PEDro score of 4.50 (SD = 1.25). 

 

Exercise significantly reduced the risk of mortality in patients with cancer and in cancer survivors (risk ratio [RR] = 0.76, 95% CI = 0.40-0.93, I2 = 0%, P = .009). 

 

Exercise significantly reduced the risk of recurrence in cancer survivors (RR = 0.52, 95% CI = 0.29-0.92, I2 = 25%, P = .030). 

 

Conclusion: This study found that exercise has a favorable effect on mortality and recurrence in patients with cancer.

 

 

 

Physical Activity Decreases Kidney Cancer Mortality (link)

Individuals who reported “any physical activity” were 50% less likely [adjusted hazard ratio (adjusted HR) 0.50, 95% CI 0.27–0.93, p = 0.028] to die of kidney cancer than non-exercisers, while obese individuals (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) were nearly 3 times more likely (adjusted HR 2.84, 95% CI 1.30–6.23, p = 0.009) compared to those of normal weight (BMI < 25 kg/m2).

[Any kind of regular physical activity is better than none, e.g. walking every weekend, or elliptical every other day]

 

Can Exercise Reduce the Risk of Cancer Recurrence? (link)

 

Exercising, even at a moderate level, is one thing cancer survivors can do to lower the odds of cancer recurrence. The most consistent and largest number of studies looking at the links between exercise and cancer recurrence and overall survival have been reported for patients with breast and colorectal cancer, though increasingly other cancer types are also being studied.
